One day, I visited a care home to lead a singalong for the elderly. As we sang familiar melodies together, memories began to flow. What surprised me was how many of them shared their life stories through places.
“I lived in Stockholm when I was young. That’s where I met my husband.”
“I grew up in Piippola. Our big family lived in a tiny cottage.”
“We spent every childhood summer at Grandma’s in Kainuu.”
These weren’t just dots on a map. They were emotional landscapes. They were chapters of life, people, and stories. They were emotional memories, the kind that remain even when words begin to fade.
Emotional memories are often the most enduring. They’re tied to places where we’ve felt safe, loved, or significant. That’s why they often remain vivid even for those with memory loss. Dates may disappear, but places tied to feelings can shine brightly in the mind.
In another care home, I asked residents about their memories. Again, the answers were anchored in places:
“That’s where I worked.”
“That was our first home.”
“That’s where I learned to swim.”
Places acted like anchors, holding onto identity and the meaningful arcs of life.
These encounters inspired the idea of the Map Memory Muff. I wanted to create something not only warm and beautiful, but also meaningful. On the surface of the muff, a map of Finland is appliquéd, with 20 cities marked by tiny beads. They were like life’s stopping points. A small Finnish flag flutters alongside, reminding us of roots and connection.
On the other side, there’s a luggage tag, a lock, and a key as symbols of one’s personal journey. There’s also a clear photo pocket, where you can add pictures of places you’ve lived or visited. The muff isn’t just something to look at or touch, it’s something you can personalize.
Alongside the Map memory muff, I’ve also created Landscape Muffs that depict familiar Finnish scenes: lakes, forests, islands, fields. These can awaken memories of childhood summers, cottage trips, or hometown views. They’re like small windows into the past—safe, familiar, and comforting.
The Map Memory Muff and Landscape Muffs are more than personal tools. They spark conversation when reminiscing with other people. They offer words when words are hard to find. They invite storytelling, listening, and connection.
What a person shares about their life reveals their experiences. And everyone deserves to be heard, even when memory no longer holds everything.
The Map Memory Muff was born from listening. It came from someone telling me where they had lived and in doing so, who they had been. It’s a piece of handcraft, but above all, it’s a map that travels in the heart.
